Solid wood furniture is built to last a lifetime — but only if you work with the timber, not against it. Singapore’s heat and humidity are demanding, and a few simple habits make the difference between furniture that ages beautifully and furniture that quietly suffers. Here is how to care for yours.
Understand what humidity does to wood
Wood is hygroscopic: it absorbs moisture from the air when it is humid and releases it when it is dry. In Singapore’s climate that means your furniture is always, subtly, breathing. This is normal and healthy — solid wood is designed to move. Problems only appear at the extremes, when a piece is soaked, baked, or swung rapidly between the two.
Keep it out of the two danger zones
- Direct sun. A tabletop parked in afternoon sun will fade unevenly and dry out faster than the rest of the piece. Use blinds or reposition, and rotate loose items so any ageing is even.
- Aircon draughts and blasts. Furniture sitting directly under a hard aircon stream dries on one side only, which is what causes cupping. A little distance is all it takes.
Clean gently, and never soak
For everyday cleaning, a soft, slightly damp cloth followed immediately by a dry one is all you need. Avoid soaking, and skip all-purpose sprays and anything with ammonia or silicone — they strip or cloud a natural oil finish over time. Wipe spills the moment they happen; standing water is the single most common cause of stains and swelling.
Feed an oiled finish once or twice a year
If your piece has a natural oil finish — as most of ours do — it will love an occasional top-up. Once or twice a year, wipe on a thin coat of the same finishing oil, leave it to soak, then buff off the excess with a clean cloth. It takes fifteen minutes, revives the colour, and quietly renews the wood’s protection. This is the single best habit for tropical living.
Treat solid wood a little like leather: keep it out of extremes, wipe it clean, and feed it now and then. Do that, and it only gets better with age.
Use coasters, mats and felt — genuinely
It sounds obvious, yet heat rings from hot mugs and scratches from dragged objects are the damage we are asked to repair most. Coasters under drinks, trivets under hot dishes, and felt pads under anything that moves will protect a surface for decades. Prevention is far easier than refinishing.
And if something does go wrong
The beauty of solid wood is that almost anything can be put right. A ring, a scratch, a dented edge — these can usually be sanded and re-oiled to invisibility, which is exactly why solid timber outlives laminated furniture. If a Carpenova piece ever needs attention, it is covered by our workmanship warranty and we are a message away.
